IE has the following eight core subjects in Period1.
- Digital innovation
- Data analysis
- Entrepreneural mindset
- Behavioral Fitness (soft skills)
Let me explain each subject and what we learned.
We learned the basics of accounting, which is the “language” of the business world. There were four points.
- Accounting Theory and Financial Statements (PL, BS, CF)
- Recording a company’s economic activity (bookkeeping)
- Analysis of annual reports and financial charts, and their role and impact on capital markets
- Ethical aspects of accounting
We learned basic things, so it’s not particularly difficult for those who have some knowledge and experience. The content itself is not new because I myself had some experience and I was in the strategic department.
We had discussion using the case, analyzed the company’s financial statements and proposed that we should invest in the company or not.
There was an easy-to-understand explanation at the beginning of the class, so I introduce it. Leadership has three phases and three actors .
|Subject \ Phase||Understanding||Predicting||Controlling|
The first step is to understand, predict and control yourself. Ultimately, do it at the organizational level. You will have to read a large number of cases in advance and have a discussion in class.
This is a course that introduces the basics of economics (micro and macro) at once. We will proceed with discussions and group work.
This class teaches the basics of marketing through theory, cases, discussions, and group assignments. More than half the time was spent on digital marketing .
- What is marketing? What is the difference from selling?
- Learn basic frameworks such as STP (segmentation, targeting, positioning) and 4P.
- Use the case method. We learned some notable companies such as Amazon and GAP.
5. Digital innovation
This is a class where you can learn everything related to digital world at once. After grasping the basics of IT and DX, we learned the technologies (cloud, SNS, AI etc) , though about digital strategies (risk, DX, business model), digital innovation and impact on society .
This class was one of the heavy classes because we needed to read many cases and articles every time. In particular, we wrote reports every lessons as a group, so if you have lessons three times a week, you will need to submit three reports. It’s a class I want to study,so I’m grateful for this kind of load.
The quality of each subject was so high that it seemed impossible to learn so systematically on your own. Also, we learned about many hot companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, AirBnb, ÜBER, Twitter, etc.
6. Data analysis
This is also a content to learn the basics of data analysis. Although it was the basics, we learned by hands on such as regression analysis of Excel , risk analysis (Monte Carlo method) , and data-based decision making (decision tree, Bayesian inference) . As the title says “Decision making”, the goal was to analyze the data for decision making .
The professor is a serial entrepreneur. I think it’s true that you can’t learn entrepreneurship unless you practice it, but I ‘m very grateful that the professor systematically taught us the steps and points to start a new business .
8. Behavioral Fitness (soft skill)
It was a class to acquire soft skills such as communication, and teamwork . It was also linked with career-related programs such as job hunting (Career Fitness). This class consisted of three parts: team building, communication, and career vision .
First of all, we took a personality diagnostic test called Belbin Team Roles . This diagnoses what role (9 types) you often play in your team. In the class, each student’s results was distributed, and after explaining and discussing what each type means, each team had a separate discussion .
It was a very good opportunity for team building.
My top two behavioral styles were “Specialist” and “Implementer” .
This applies to what I am aware of in my usual group work : ( ) contributing to the team in my area of expertise (data analysis, logic, etc.), and (2) team scheduling and progress management.
We learned how to formulate individual’s career vision and how to incorporate it into weekly actions .
After the class, I submitted my career goals and action plan in five years from now, but I’m looking forward to receiving it by email in five years.
Period 1 is said to be pretty tough at every school. It was true. But if you manage this, it will improve your skill and capability.
